Born in 1947 on Texas Downs Station, Churchill Yoonany, has deep roots in the Kimberley region. His father worked as a stockman, and his mother contributed to the station's homestead. Churchill's career mirrored his father's path as a respected stockman and skilled horse-breaker. His experiences extended to working on various stations, including Alice Downs, Mabel Downs, Spring Creek, and Lissadel. Alongside fellow artists Dougie McCale and Patrick Mung Mung, he eventually made his way to Turkey Creek (Warmun Community). There, he embarked on a new creative journey, collaborating with close friend Rover Thomas and artists like Jack Britten, Hector Jandany, and Henry Wambini, among others. His unique artistic style quickly gained recognition, leading to numerous exhibitions and global acclaim, with his artworks now gracing galleries and collections worldwide. Notably, Churchill's masterpiece, "Arizona - Texas," graced the cover of an important publication about Aboriginal Art, published in both English and German, elevating his status as a sought-after artist among European collectors. Churchill Cann stands as one of Australia's most renowned Ochre Artists, celebrated for his instantly recognizable style and his remarkable ability to blend a kaleidoscope of colors from the foundational ochres found in his beloved Kimberley region.
