May the friendship of the artist' of our two nations are eternal' (...心感谢主人对我的亲切接待。祝我们两国艺术家的友谊万古长青), signed below 'GAO Hong' (高虹) and 'ZHU Huajun' (朱华钧), dated 'October 1964' (一九六四年十月), on the left side signed and dated 'reunion after 29 years in Berlin/YANG Chengxu/06th October 1983' (二十九年后在柏林重逢 / 杨成绪 / 一九八三年六月十日) 9. LAI Shaoqi (1915-2000), girl on the riverbank, ink painting, signed and dated lower left 'lakeside/May 20, 1965' (湖畔 / 少言 /一九六五年五廿), artist's seal. 10. YANG Chengxu (b. 1930), left side with an extensive calligraphy 'in the spring of 1990 I visit Berlin again and have talked very nicely with Klemke. Nevertheless, I take a brush and love to paint spring, wind and snow' (自笑丹青画不/工挥毫依爱春风雪), artist's seal in the shape of a immortal Provenance: Private collection of Werner Klemke (1917-1994), Berlin LI Keran (1907-1989) LI Keran was one of the most popular Chinese painters of the 20th century and was particularly known for his depictions of the water buffalo. The latter became his symbol of China's humiliation, which combined submission and strength. From 1923 LI Keran studied at the Art School in Shanghai and was taught by painters such as QIAN Shichi. Six years later LI Keran joined the Academy of Fine Arts of Hangzhou. During this time he was inspired by Western oil painting and joined the 'progressive artist society'. In 1937, after the outbreak of the Sino-Japanese war, he worked in the political section of the military council of the national government. Guan Liang (1900-1986) Guan Liang was a Chinese painter and an important representative of the first generation of oil painters in China, who blended the Western and Chinese art styles. Guan Liang was born in Panyu, Guangdong province and began to study oil painting in Japan in 1917. In 1922 he returned to China and taught at the Shanghai Art School and the National Academy of Art in Hangzhou. Guan Liang's first solo exhibition was held in Sichuan in 1940. In 1957 he belonged to a group of three selected artists, who could exhibit their works at the Berlin Art Institute in East Germany. Guan Liang was vice chairman of the Chinese Artists Association and a member of the Shanghai Research Institute of Culture and History. Although he began his career as an oil painter Guan later focused on traditional Chinese ink painting with figures of the Peking Opera. HE Tianjian (1891-1977) HE Tianjian was a Chinese Guohua painter and a leading member of the Shanghai Art School. He was born in Wuxi, Jiangsu province and began painting at the age of eight. In 1911 he started studying at the Guomin University in Nanjing, but joined the Zhonghua Book Company in the same year, where he worked as an editor for painting. In the 1920s he taught landscape painting in Wuxi, Nanjing and Shanghai and was extremely influential in the following years. After the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, he was an employee and painter at the Shanghai Institute of Chinese Painting. HE Tianjian's works can also be found in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Werner Klemke (1917-1994) Werner Klemke was born in Berlin-Weissensee and was a German illustrator and professor. In the late 1940s Klemke worked for various magazines. His woodcuts in the 1950s revealed his talent and a few years later, he became professor of typography and book art at the renowned Art School in Weissensee. In the mid-1950s he took a study trip to China and was significantly influenced by the local color woodcuts. His works have inspired generations in book, journals and magazines and have been awarded with several national prizes. Werner Klemke was a member of the Academy of Arts since 1961, an honorary member of the Academy of Arts of the USSR and an honorary citizenship of the Italian town of Certaldo. His estate is held in the Offenbach Klingspor Museum, which specializes in books and calligraphy. Condition: The album is in good condition with slight signs of age and wear.
