WE HAVE BEEN NOTIFIED THAT BECAUSE THE CHELSEA HOTEL IS A LANDMARKED BUILDING, THE ORIGINAL STAINED GLASS WINDOWS CANNOT BE SOLD. 19th century, original to the Hotel, 37.5" x 35.5", several glass panels missing. New York City’s Chelsea Hotel is a landmark known around the world. In contrast to most hotels, the Chelsea has always been “residential” in that those who stay there actually live there. And through most of its history, the Chelsea has attracted the most interesting people - writers, artists, musicians and actors. One of the most physically distinguishing features of the Chelsea Hotel has been its display of Stained Glass. Fronting on NYC’s active 23rd Street, the Chelsea was alive with color as passers-by took in the myriad of patterns expertly executed in glass more than a century ago. Typically, the stained glass panels fit above the doorways leading to the Hotel’s terraces. While some of the original Stained Glass panels remain in place today, others were removed as the Hotel has adapted to modern requirements. This lot contains one of the Hotel’s original Stained-Glass panels. Notice to bidders: More detailed condition reports and additional photographs are available by request. The absence of a condition report does not imply that the lot is in excellent condition.
