Gunnel Nyman for Nuutajärvi-Notsjö, a glass Serpentiini or Serpentine vase, designed 1947, the clear colourless glass encasing an opaque white glass spiral, etched marks h:45.50 cm Literature: Finnish Modern Design: Utopian Ideals and Everyday Realities, 1930-1997, Aave and Stritzler, fig. 29 Other Notes: Gunnel Nyman (1909-1948) An important Finnish designer who worked for the Nuutajärvi glassworks from 1942. The quality of light when embodied in glass was a major interest for Nyman. She was interested fluid, organic forms which could be trapped within the glass by use of bubbles or, as with this vase, opaque white glass. The Victoria and Albert Museum hold one of her Serpentine Vases as part of their permanent collection. It was one of the last works she designed before her early death.
