작품 상세
A TEKE FIGURE FOR FERTILITY, REPUBLIC OF CONGO A carved wooden figure depicted standing upright with a strong, frontal presence. The head is large and geometric, with a broad, flat-topped coiffure and stylised facial scarification composed of incised linear patterns across the cheeks. The almond-shaped eyes are deeply carved beneath arched brows, and the mouth is small and closed, set above a squared chin. Projecting ears flank the head. The elongated cylindrical neck supports a compact torso. The arms bend forward symmetrically, framing a rectangular cavity or receptacle carved into the abdomen, likely intended for the insertion of ritual substances. The legs are short and powerful, slightly apart, with broad, flattened feet. The surface shows a dark, rich patina with areas of wear and encrustation consistent with age and handling. Figures of this type were used among the Teke peoples of the Republic of Congo in fertility and protective contexts. The abdominal cavity typically held empowering materials, activating the figure’s spiritual efficacy within communal or domestic ritual practice.
