작품 상세
Carved wood with textile, aluminum, and plant fiber inlays. Dimensions: 26 × 17 cm (total height with base: 40 cm). This ritual mask belongs to the zapkei ge type, characterized by its eyes blindfolded with red fabric, a distinctive attribute of the so-called "fire masks," responsible for watching over domestic fires and preventing fires within the community. The highly realistic face features prominent cheekbones and protruding ears, with a blackened surface crossed by a red band edged in metal, reinforcing its symbolic function. The carefully crafted hairstyle, made of fine braids, textiles, and plant fibers, creates a balanced and highly ceremonial ensemble, with abrasions and wear consistent with its ritual use. Among the Dan, also known as Yacouba and located in western Ivory Coast and Liberia, the spiritual force called dü manifests itself through masks, which act as mediators between the visible and invisible worlds. According to tradition, spirits communicate in dreams the type of mask that should be made, assigning it social, spiritual, or political functions that can evolve over time. Within this repertoire, the go ge type was the most prestigious variant, reserved for exceptional events. From a French collection, the piece is presented with its certificate of authenticity and is fully part of the rich sculptural and ritual tradition of the Dan people.
