작품 상세
Carved wood. Dimensions: 50 × 13 × 14 cm. Seated sculpture with hands resting on thighs, characterized by a prominent belly that symbolically alludes to fertility and the regeneration of life. The body is arranged vertically, with an excessively elongated neck leading to a strongly stylized, angular face, where the characteristic arrow-shaped nasal profile clearly reflects the formal canons of Dogon art. The crested hairpiece is decorated with zigzag incisions, while the surface of the sculpture shows heavily eroded wood and a light patina, the result of time and ritual use. In Dogon society, the principal religious leaders are the Hogon, priests of the lebe cult, closely linked to agriculture and the life cycle, whose main ceremony, known as bulu, celebrates rebirth and the return of life in spring. Ancestor worship, or binu, also occupies a central place, guaranteeing protection and benevolence for descendants. Sculptors and blacksmiths form a distinct caste, custodians of hereditary knowledge and considered bearers of special powers within the community. From the private Recupero collection, the piece is presented with its certificate of authenticity and is a representative example of the formal and symbolic diversity of 20th-century Dogon art. Lot in international warehouse (within the EU). Intra-EU shipping: no import duties apply within the EU. An export permit from the country of origin may be required.
