Aymara Ceremonial Poncho, Salinas de Garci Mendoza, Dept. of Oruro, 19th C. A man's heirloom poncho used in ceremonies by tribes from the region surrounding the ancient market town at the northern end of the Salar de Uyuni. Like all Aymara tribes, these people adhered to a strict format of color juxtaposition and layout to distinguish themselves to outsiders while displaying unity within their group. This reaffirmation of identity was essential for the success of ritual events. Often made without fringe, this poncho features a characteristic maroon field and exhibits some slight wear consistent with age and use. Size: 2'10'' x 3'7'' (86 x 109 cm).
