Black History Black Americana "ICE COLD" Hand-Painted Wooden Sign of African American Woman holding watermelon c. 1940, Colorful Hand-Painted Wooden Advertising Sign of an African American Woman holding half of a watermelon with the large caption "ICE COLD" that measures 26" tall x 23" wide x 3/4" thick, Choice Very Fine. Definitely a vintage Original Wood Painted Advertising Sign Depicting a Black Woman and Watermelon, that features a caricatured or stereotypical depiction, rooted in historical racism in America and used in advertising, likely painted circa 1940 or so. A genuine antique advertising piece worthy of collecting or teaching, related to Black History and the American experience. Large and impressive with natural expected age yet in superior condition. According to Robbin Henderson, director of the Berkeley Art Center, who said, "derogatory imagery enables people to absorb stereotypes; which in turn allows them to ignore and condone injustice, discrimination, segregation, and racism." Though having some light wear the glossy oil paint remains visually quite vibrant and excellent for display. We ship what we sell.
