BP 254 Hogarth Galleries, NSW Private collection, NSW George Milpurrurru (c.1934–1998) was a senior Ganalbingu artist from Ramingining in Central Arnhem Land, celebrated for transforming ancestral design into powerful contemporary compositions. A leading figure of the bark-painting renaissance, Milpurrurru's works are defined by rhythmic geometry, intricate rarrk (cross-hatching), and refined depiction of ancestral beings central to Ganalbingu law. In Ratjuk (Barramundi), c.1992, Milpurrurru depicts the barramundi as both a physical species and a totemic ancestor associated with the freshwater systems of his Country. The fish, rendered with luminous ochres and fine linework, moves through a field of interlocking clan designs that represent water currents and sandbanks. Each pattern signifies the life-giving interplay between land and water, spirit and sustenance. @ GEORGE MILPURRURRU / Copyright Agency, 2025
