작품 상세
Medium hardwood, cloth Eastern Africa, Tanzania, mid-20th century Sukuma people male ancestor with post-like base, possibly used as a boundary or grave marker Height: approx. 93 cm The Sukuma people are based in Tanzania and are primarily known for their wooden figures that are reduced to their essentials in design. Offered object is an example for this exceptional art. The figure depicts a man, who by means of position and arm posture seems to be static. It is thus in contrast to the movable puppets, the mabinda of the Sukuma that are often used in theatrical dance performances. Therefore it can be assumed that this figure with conical base was not a dance figure, but that it was rather used as boundary or grave marker. The figure shows signs of age and wear. The surface bears distinct traces of weathering and the wood shows termite infestations (inactive) in places. The height is approx. 93 cm.
