The western Arnhem Land is known for its Aboriginal art: over thousands of years the indigenous population has created works of art in caves and on rocks. The painting was executed in the so-called 'rarrk' technique. To create images of this kind, the artist draws the contours of his motifs, which he then fills with cross-hatching in different colors. Mawurndjul works primarily with ocher pigments, thus his works are generally characterized by a warm color scheme. The present work depicts an abstracted fish shape - a barramundi - in red, black, white and ocher. On the verso there is a certificate of authenticity from Maningrida Arts & Crafts, dated March 1990, and a handwritten inscription with the catalogue number 'MAW 171'. The painting is in good condition. The surface is slightly rubbed in places and there are a few cracks in the wood. The dimensions are 135 x 61 cm. John Mawurndjul (b. 1952) John Mawurndjul was born in Mumeka, south of Maningrida settlement, in 1952. In the late 1970s he learnt to paint and was taught by his brother and uncle. He first created small-scale works in which he used the traditional 'rarrk' technique (cross-hatching) in new and innovative ways. His subjects included animals of the Australian fauna and mythological creatures. From the 1980s onwards Mawurndjul began to paint large and complex images. He quickly established his reputation, initially in Australia and later abroad, and was honored with several awards. Some of his works are now in the Musée du Quai Branly in Paris and in 2005 he had his first retrospective at the Museum Tinguely in Basel.
