Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606ÛÒ1669), Jan Cornelis Sylvius, Preacher etching with drypoint, burin, and sulfur tinting on laid paper, 1646, a 17th century/lifetime impression of Bartsch's and Usticke's first state (of 2), showing the burr on the signature and extensive sulphur tinting on the curtain and robe of the figure, printed before the small patch above the right eye was darkened with cross hatching, sheet bears the "Strasbourg Bend" watermark (Ash/Fletcher 35.A.a; Hinterding A.a.a) that is the same watermark found in impressions of this etching in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the National Gallery of Victoria, Australia, and the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, matted and framed. Bartsch 280 i/ii; Hind 225; Bi̦rklund-Barnard 46-E; Usticke 273 i/ii. For this lot, payment accepted only by wire transfer. Platemark 280 x 189 mm. (10 7/8 x 7 1/2 in.); Sheet Size 291 x 201 mm.
