Georges Mathieu, French 1921 -2012 Composition 1958; Chinese ink on Arches paper, signed and dated '58' in black ink, 56 x 76cm, (ARR) Provenance: Sir Clifford Norton; The collection of Lady Norton; Private Collection, London Note: Georges Mathieu was a French painter and theorist credited with launching the Lyrical Abstraction movement and the greater trend of Informalism in post-WWII Paris. Mathieu was known for his distinctive calligraphic and rhythmic pictures, which notably resembles Jackson Pollock’s (1912-1956) drip paintings, which is evident in this work from 1958. His work can be found in the collections of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago, amongst others With thanks to Mr. Jean-Marie Cusinberche for the information he has kindly provided on this work. Please refer to department for condition report When examined out of the frame, the work has been stuck on the mount, with some fading on the edges. There is a slight tear on the edge, which is not visible on the mount only when inspected out of the frame. There is a slight yellow stain on the work. Overall the work is in good condition.
