GEORGE ELMER BROWNE PAINTED SALMAGUNDI CLUB MUG signed and dated 1900, library mug 1900, registered No. 10 and club monogram under base, painted in blues with a portrait of a fashionable lady flanked by Art Nouveau trailing flowers above a banner, the interior base with a further portrait, the inner rim with trailed decoration -- h: 6 in.; together with a Weller Ware Handmade two-handled vase -- h: 7 in. and a J.B. Owens Utopia jug -- h: 5.75 in. (3) Other Notes: In order to raise funds for its library, the Salmagundi Club began auctioning mugs painted by its members. Members painted no more than 24 mugs each year, which were then fired by the Volkmar Pottery. This tradition continued until 1923.
