I’ve always been attracted to the Southwest style of art, for its abstract simplicity. I am a shameless borrower, and frequently prey upon close friends who are avid collectors. The owner of this vase has an enviable collection, and I could spend the remainder of my career painting my way through her house. I was charmed by the bone fragment and pheasant feathers decorating this hand-made vase. The bone and feathers began a directional design which begged to be completed with the red feather. I feel a kindred spirit with the artists who study the artifacts and designs to create these pieces, and it’s a way for me to honor their craft when I use them for a painting.
