c.1920 M. Luce Wildenstein Institute Certificate. Signed bottom right. Measures - 13 1/4" high x 16 1/4" wide + 4" frame. Maximilian Luce was born in Paris in 1858. Early in his career, he became close friends with such painters as Camille Pissarro, Georges Seurat, Theo Van Rysselberghe, and Louis Valtat. Together with Seurat and Signac, co-founders of the Neoimpressionist school, Luce helped develop a movement which based itself on the scientific study of light and the analysis of the prismatic effect of colors. In the years following, Maximilian Luce worked strictly by the ideas of pointillism. Later, he altered his technique in favor of a less formal painting style. Luce's paintings encompass landscapes, city scenes, and depictions of working people. Maximilian Luce died in 1941.
