Attributed to Sebastiano Conca The Birth of the Virgin Oil on copper 12 1/4 x 9 5/8 inches (31.1 x 24.4 cm) Provenance: Private Collection Spanierman Gallery, New York This painting has been attributed to Sebastiano Conca (1680-1764), a celebrated Neapolitan artist active in Rome in the early eighteenth century. Based on a study of a photograph of this work in 2001, Nicola Spinosa, director of the Capodimonte Museum Naples, Italy, felt it was by Conca, dating from the years of his Roman maturity. The pervasive curvature in the perspective and the putti emerging from the clouds foreshadow the dramatic energy and illusionism that would become a hallmark of the new rococo style Conca helped introduce into the art of Catholic Rome.
