Valdis Celms (1943), Diptych. Prague 1967/1968. Day. Night. Photo collage,1968. Soviet modernism. Gelatin silver print, ink, felt-tip pen. Each piece 21,5 x 40, 5 cm (cardboard 33 x 51,5 cm). Authorised and signed on verso. Dedicated to Prague Spring of Czechoslovakia (1968). First part Day reflects the joy and hope for the democratic reforms to transform the totalitarian regime of the USSR. During this lighter period the artist managed to take photographs of St. Vitus Cathedral, the grand monument of Gothic architecture, considered as the symbol of Prague by the Czech people. The second part Night deals with the USSR army entering Prague and suppressing the reforms, August 21st 1968.
