Alan Shields (American, 1944-2005) Painting Collage. Title: Beads Under All Watercolor painting, on wove paper. Inscribed lower left, To Rod and Cheryl on their wedding day. Signed lower right Alan Shields. Museum quality frame with floating mount. Measures 21.6 inches high, 20 inches wide. Frame measures 24.5 inches high, 24 wide. In good condition. We have enjoyed traveling on the Shelter Island Ferry for many years and Alan was their most colorful part time Ferry Captain. In good condition. Alan Shields (1944-2005) was an American artist known for his colorful, abstract artworks, including paintings, prints, sculptures, and installations. He was born in Herington, Kansas, and grew up in Kansas and Missouri. Shields studied at Kansas City Art Institute, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1966, and later earned his Master of Fine Arts degree from Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan in 1968. After completing his studies, he moved to New York City and began exhibiting his work in various galleries and museums. Shields' art is characterized by its vibrant colors, intricate patterns, and organic forms. He often worked with a variety of materials, including canvas, thread, beads, and paper, and used a range of techniques, such as sewing, weaving, and painting, to create his multi-layered compositions. Throughout his career, Shields' art was exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in galleries and museums around the world. He was a recipient of several grants and awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts grant in 1984 and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1985. Shields was also a dedicated teacher and taught at several institutions, including the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Canada, and the University of Kansas in Lawrence. He was highly respected by his students and peers, and his legacy continues to influence many contemporary artists. Alan Shields passed away in 2005 in Shelter Island, New York. His work can be found in many public and private collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., and the Tate Gallery in London.
