(56.5 x 76.5 cm) Excellent condition Estimate: $2,000-4,000 The two monotypes in this lot were made by the artist in a print shop in New York City in 1985 and 1996 respectively. She worked closely with a master printer to develop unique chine collé techniques to further the monotype medium. Her time in the print studio developed Gilot's budding virtuosity in the printmaking medium of monotype, which she explored extensively. With each visit she made to the shop, a series of wonderful unique monotypes were created over time. Francoise Gilot (French, b. 1921) Francoise Gilot was born in Paris in 1921, and is remembered as a notable painter, bestselling author, and the lover and muse of Pablo Picasso. She studied painting at L’Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris, and was one of the most celebrated artists of the school. Gilot met Picasso when she was 21 years old, and although she borrowed techniques from her lover, it was Georges Braque who made the most distinct impression on her artistic style. Her works are collected by The Museum of Modern Art, New York; Musée Picasso, Antibes; Tel Aviv Museum of Art; and Musée d’art moderne de la ville de Paris. Condition In overall excellent condition.
