Imi Knoebel (b. 1940) Born as Klaus Wolf Knoebel in Dessau, Imi Knoebel studied from 1964 to 1971 at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. He first attended the class for commercial art of Walter Breker and then moved into the class of Joseph Beuys. He took part at the documenta exhibitions 5 to 8 and the major exhibition ‘von hier aus’ in Dusseldorf. Further exhibitions in Germany and abroad followed. Based on the design principles of constructivism, but developing them freely and individually, Knoebel explores in two- and three-dimensional works the interaction of material, color and space.
