Characteristic abstract composition with a relief surface from the artist's late oeuvre; the current highest auction record for a work by Alfred Reth is more than €140,000 This work by Alfred Reth (1884-1966) depicts one of his characteristic abstract compositions. The Hungarian-born artist lived and worked in Paris, where he was one of the first to devote himself to abstraction. In 1932, he joined the group of artists 'Abstraction-Création', which counted Vassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Auguste Herbin, Naum Gabo and Jean Arp among its members. After the World War II, Reth as one of the pioneers of the avant-garde experimented not only with forms but various textures, calling for new materials in non-representational art. Thus in the present work, Reth has created an abstract landscape without any figurative allusions, using oil paint, wood chips and gravel. The combination of different materials creates a tactile relief which challenges the viewer's senses. The work is in very good condition, showing some minor craquelures. It is signed with 'A. Reth.' lower right. The stretcher measures 58.5 x 78 cm, and the frame is 69 x 90 cm in size. Alfred Reth (1884-1966) Alfred Reth was born in Budapest in 1884. He trained as a painter with the Hungarian impressionist László Mednyánszky, where he developed an interest for Buddhism and oriental art. From 1903 onwards, he was a member of the artists' colony of Nagybánya, two years later he moved to Paris. Here he became acquainted with the works by Cézanne and joined the Cubists in 1907. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, alongside artists such as Matisse, Braque and Léger. As an artist of the École de Paris, Reth also showed his works abroad. After the First World War, he was one of the first artists who devoted himself to abstraction. Today some of his works are held in prestigious collections, including the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris or the National Gallery of Hungary.
