Mixed Media, corrugated cardboard, dispersion paint, framed in object box Germany, c. 1950/70 Herbert Zangs (1924-2003) - German artist Signed at the right side 'Zangs' In the original object box Dimensions: 62 x 52 cm Good Condition Provenance: Private collection, Netherlands (acquired from the Willem Kerseboom Gallery, Bergen) A characteristic object by German artist Herbert Zangs from the series 'Plus-Minus'-signs with the typical 'Whitening'; his works fetch up to €25,200 on the international auction market Offered here is a work by the artist Herbert Zangs It is a characteristic wall object. Already in the 50s Zangs began to collect objects and mounted them on a white ground, painting them with white color, creating his so-called 'Whitening' which he took up again and again in the following years. Our work is from the series called 'Plus-Minus', in which the artist cuts out different calculation symbols from cardboard, mounting them to a support and painting it white. The object is laterally signed lower right 'Zangs'. It is overall in good condition, the white support cardboard shows some water stains on the right edge and the reverse. The back is further slightly wavy caused by moisture. The object is framed in the original box, measuring 62 x 52 cm. The box shows slight signs of age and wear. Herbert Zangs (1924-2003) Herbert Zang was born 1924 in Krefeld. Shortly after the war he began his studies at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf where he studied with Otto Pankok until 1949. Several study trips followed as well as longer stays in Paris, where he met the artist Wols. In addition to figurative works Zangs also created abstract works he calls 'Whitening'. Further work groups included 'Foldings', 'Plus-Minus' works, 'Knottings', Relief-Paintings as well as travel images. Zangs was honored with numerous awards and exhibitions, amongst others at the Hamburger Kunsthalle, the Sprengel Museum Hannover, the Contemporary Art Collection of Germany in Bonn and the Stuttgart State Gallery.
