작품 상세
LÖIS MAILOU JONES (1905 - 1998) Festival. Mixed media on thin cream wove paper, 1964. 825x610 mm; 32 1/2x24 inches. Signed and dated in watercolor, lower right. Provenance: the artist, Washington, DC, with her hand-written label on the frame back; private collection, Washington, DC. This large and vibrant work on paper is a scarce example of abstract painting by the artist. Jones was clearly inspired by the rising popularity of Abstract-Expressionism in the early 1960s, and made some forays into abstraction during her trips to Haiti at the time. Other examples of abstract paintings include Cock Fight, 1960, Mardi Gras, 1961, and Vévé Voudou II, 1963. Benjamin pp. 84 and 86.
