Mixed media: over-painted photograph Austria, 1973 Arnulf Rainer (b. 1929) - Austrian painter Titled, signed and dated with pencil lower right ''Knistern' A. Reiner 73' Typical unique over-painted photography Overall dimensions, framed: Good condition Provenance: Private collection, Germany Expressive piece of the series 'Face Farces' that illustrates the work of Rainer par excellence The present work is a typical unique self-portrait from the series 'Face Farces' by Arnulf Rainer. In 1968, the artist began to experiment with physiognomic perversions of his own facial expressions by using a photo booth and later a commissioned photographer. Rainer usually over-painted the resulting photographs, in order to intensify the distorted facial expressions displayed in his portrays. The core subject of the series was to explore the situation and living condition of mentally ill persons who are consistently exposed to a (pretended) healthy society. Especially the early works that were taken inside a photo booth corresponded to the principle of immediacy that characterized the artistic approach by representatives of the Viennese Actionism. The work is in good condition considering its age. The paper is slightly wavy and shows light traces of the studio. The upper corners are verso mounted onto the rear cardboard of the passe-partout. The piece is titled, signed and dated with pencil lower right ''Knistern' A. Reiner 73'. The frame is in good condition with only small traces of wear. The framed work measures 71.5 x 82 cm and the size of the work itself is 49.5 x 60 cm. Arnulf Rainer (b. 1929) Arnulf Rainer was born in Baden near Vienna in 1929. Shortly afterwards his works were exhibited in a gallery in Frankfurt, one of the first manifestations of 'Art Informel' in Central Europe. Between 1953 and 59 he began working on a series of so-called reductions, precursors to his famous 'Overpaintings'. In 1966 Rainer was awarded the Austrian State Prize for graphics. Two years later, the Museum of the 20th Century in Vienna held a first retrospective. In 1981 he was appointed professor at the Academy of Fine Arts and was given emeritus status in 1995.
