MARCELLE FERRON, R.C.A.SANS TITREcollage and mixed media on canvassigned on the reverse 39.5 ins x 28.75 ins; 100.3 cms x 73 cms Provenance:Studio of the artistPrivate Collection, QuebecLiterature:Roald Nasgaard and Ray Ellenwood, The Automatistes, Montreal 1941-1960, Douglas & McIntyre, Toronto/Vancouver/Berkeley, 2009, page 121.Note:This work was acquired by the present owner directly from Ferron, whom she visited in her studio. At the time it was executed, Ferron had been exploring the properties of translucency in certain materials for a major commission she had been awarded to embellish one of the newly built Metro stations in Montreal: Champ-de-Mars (see image, from www.stm.info/en/about/discover_the_stm_its_history/art-metro/list-artworks/champ-de-mars-station-marcelle-ferron). Ferron's reputation upon returning to Quebec after living aboard for many years was considerable, and securing her involvement in this project was a point of enormous pride for the Mayor and the Premier. Ray Ellenwood writes: "Clearly the impact of signatories of the Refus Global on the broad cultural landscape of Montreal - in painting, literature, theatre, dance, television and design - has been immense. Even their affect on physical aspects of the city has been remarkable... with Marcelle Ferron's work in large abstract stained glass installations for the subway, for government buildings and for private homes..."This canvas captures a luminous and crystalline quality, equal to those present in Ferron's stained glass.
