The Hungarian-born artist lived and worked in Paris where he was one of the first to devote himself to abstraction; in 1932 he joined the group of artists 'Abstraction-Création' which counted among its members Vassily Kandinsky, Piet Mondrian, Auguste Herbin, Naum Gabo and Jean Arp. After the Second World War Reth as one of the pioneers of the avant-garde experimented not only with forms but various textures, calling for new materials in non-representational art. Thus in the present work Reth has created an abstract landscape without any figurative allusions, using oil paint, sand and gravel. The combination of different materials creates a tactile relief which challenges the viewer's senses. The work is in very good condition, fractionally with minor craquelure. It is signed 'A. Reth.' lower right. The frame shows minor signs of wear. The framed work measures 48.5 x 88 cm, the wooden panel measures 29.4 x 68.2 cm. Alfred Reth (1884-1966) Alfred Reth was born in Budapest in 1884. He trained as a painter with the Hungarian impressionist László Mednyánszky, where he developed an interest for Buddhism and oriental art. From 1903 onwards he was a member of the artists' colony of Nagybánya, two years later he moved to Paris. Here he became acquainted with the works by Cézanne and joined the Cubists in 1907. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, alongside artists such as Matisse, Braque and Léger. As an artist of the École de Paris, Reth also showed his works abroad. After the First World War, he was one of the first artists who devoted himself to abstraction. Today some of his works are held in prestigious collections such as the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris or the National Gallery of Hungary.
