Underneath his handwriting he has drawn a circle in which he has placed his signature. The politically engaged Beuys surely wanted to remind the viewer of another Germany that was ruled by a different regime. Joseph Beuys was a thorn in the flesh of the inspectors of the socialist cultural policy. It was not until after his death in 1986 that he was granted his first solo exhibition in the GDR. This work is in good condition. It is signed and dated on the lower right hand side with "Joseph Beuys 84". The work is mounted on a white background and framed in a narrow wooden frame. The overall dimensions are 63 x 79 cm; the dimensions of the cardboard are 36 x 51 cm. Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) Born 1921 in Krefeld, Joseph Beuys was one of the most important German artist of the second half of the 20 th Century. After his military service at the German Air Force and his legendary plane crash in 1944, Beuys began his career as an artist as the master pupil of Ewald Mataré at the Stately Art Academy in Dusseldorf. Already in the early days, the artist received numerous commissions and in 1961 he was called to the Dusseldorf Academy as Professor. Beuys works were exhibited at the documenta III in Kassel and the 37 th Biennale in Venice and were honored with many, international awards. In 1979, Beuys met with Andy Warhol, who created the famous silkscreen portrait of the artist. In 1986 Beuys died at the age of 64 in his studio in Dusseldorf. His works can be found in many international museums such as the Tate Modern in London, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Museum Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.
