작품 상세

A fine Indian circular dhal shield constructed of hardened leather, richly hand-painted to the face with an allover repeating floral and foliate pattern in black against a deep red ground. The composition is organized around a central roundel and framed by multiple concentric borders, including an outer band of scrolling floral ornament picked out in cream, red, and gilt. Four raised metal bosses reinforce the center, arranged in a square formation and securing the internal grip system. The reverse retains its original red-painted surface decorated with scattered gilt florettes and fitted with a padded leather hand grip and arm straps, stitched and riveted in place. The bold palette, dense surface patterning, and large scale are characteristic of North Indian martial shields produced for both ceremonial and parade use during the 19th century.
