작품 상세
A brilliant example of the An XII Dragoon sword used by French Cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars, with its long straight blade, double-fullered to each side, bearing the characteristic thickened, spear-like point. The forte of the blade is marked with the 'L' stamp used by controller 'Francois Louis Lobstein' as well as the wreathed 'B' stamp used by controller 'Jean-Georges Bick'. The spine is engraved with the 'Klingenthal' manufacturer's mark and dated October 1813. The hilt is composed of a wire-wrapped, black leather grip surrounded by a brass 4-bar guard and is stamped with the rack number and various stamped poinçon marks. The sword is kept within a metal scabbard with two suspension rings. These swords were unusually reinforced for piercing as they were intended to be used for thrusting rather than cutting, more like a lance than a sabre. Their weight and length makes them somewhat unwieldy for use on foot, but perfect for use on horseback where the energy of the charge is used to project the sword. Klingenthal, France, 19th century.
