Searle for the Club français de la Médaille, half-length figure of Philipon to left, beating the drum of Charivari, rev . pear-shaped portrait of Louis-Philippe, edge impressed cu 1980 no. 6/100 and cornucopia, 76mm, 222.76g (CGMP p.679; cf . BM Acq. 19983-7, p.86, 242-3). Extremely fine, as made; in black card box of issue £50-£70 --- Provenance: Bonhams Auction, 12 November 2007, lot 112 (part). Edition of 100. Charles Philipon (1800-61), lithographer, caricaturist and journalist, founder and director of the satirical political journals La Caricature and Le Charivari . As a confirmed republican, his metamorphosed caricature of Louis-Philippe, comparing him to a pear and published in Le Charivari , earned him a lengthy prison sentence in 1832. The work of Philipon and other caricaturists continued to concern the authorities and, following an unsuccessful attempt on the life of Louis-Philippe, new press laws were introduced in August 1835 which resulted in the closure of political journals
