TWO FRAGMENTS OF THE ENSIGN FLOWN BY VICTORY AT TRAFALGAR TWO FRAGMENTS OF THE ENSIGN FLOWN BY VICTORY AT TRAFALGAR two bunting fragments from the ensign flown by Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar and later processed then torn apart by sailors at Nelson’s State Funeral, one blue strip -- 5 x 1¾in. (13 x 4.5cm.); with another white strip, with residual sealing wax -- 4 x 1in. (10 x 2.5cm.), both framed together with an ALS of provenance from the Reverend Henry Hoper to J. Enys Jun., by registered post, dated 9 May 1856 stating: ‘The scrap of bunting was part of the Flag born by the Victory at Trafalgar, afterwards carried by Sailors at Nelson’s funeral & torn to pieces after the ceremony & scramble for by the by-standers one of whom was my Wife’s Cousin Mr J. Constable from whom I obtained the Relic’ -- framed 16 x21½in. (41 x 55cm.) Bonhams London: The Enys Collection of Autograph Manuscripts, 28 September 2004, lot 117. Henry Hoper (1788-1858) was an antiquary and vicar of St. Nicholas, Portslade from 1815 until his death. In 1829, he married Sarah Constable. John Constable was curate of St. Nicholas, Portslade from 1803-1815. Good condition.
