This carte de visite shows the bust of a Union officer, likely one of the members of the First Nevada Volunteers organized in 1863.These volunteer soldiers were raised to replace the regular soldiers who were guarding the western trails in Nevada and Utah. The regular soldiers were then able to go east to join in the war. The photographer's imprint on the back (Sutterley) is partly obscured by a revenue stamp but it indicates that this cdv was taken in Virginia City, Nevada Territory. Top corners have tiny trims, else extra fine condition. ^ Date: Country (if not USA): State: Nevada City: Virginia City Provenance: Douglas McDonald Collection
