Lt. Sylvester H. Day (1840-1926), Nevada National Guard, CDV c.1862. Identified in pencil on reverse. This CDV was taken about 1862 when Day was a lieutenant in the Pennsylvania 18th infantry. In the post-war years Day moved to Nevada and in 1875, when John Day was Land Register, Sylvester H. Day was his deputy. In 1896, he was commissioned the postmaster of Carson City, a position he held until 1900. In 1905 Day, with Governor John Sparks, designed the first Nevada state flag. At that time he had risen to the rank of Colonel and was the Assistant Adjutant General of the Nevada National Guard. That unit was disbanded in 1906. Only one flag of the new design was made, and in 1923 he donated this flag to the Nevada Historical Society. Day died in 1926. ^ Date: Country (if not USA): State: Nevada City: Provenance: Douglas McDonald Collection
