An archive of material related to WWI, apparently assembled, written, and/or kept by a seaman, including: – 4to hardcover diary of W. V. C. Johnson, A.B., H.M.S. Cumberland. With several drawings pasted at front, around 30 pages of manuscript at front, then 7 pages at rear captioned H.M.S. Hood Worlds Cruise 1923-24. Balance of album blank. – Small 4to album containing manuscript poetry with WWI or battle themes, diary entries, signed at front W. V. C. Johnson, ca. 1914-16. Also includes numerous drawings. Approx. 50 pages of poetry, approx. 33 pages of diary, around 7 leaves of drawings, and more. – Numerous manuscript leaves and hand-drawn map related to fighting the Bolsheviks post-WWI in Kaffa Bay, unbound, with chipping. – Four photographs or portraits, including the Queen, "The Assassin by Night", William Gladstone, and the HMS Cumberland in Bermuda. Plus a drawing of King Edward mounted inside a black paper folder. – A 38 page manuscript dated 1916, "Battle Signals." 12mo, loose sheets. – 8vo booklet "Distances steamed while on the Mediterranean Station 1919-20. HMS Marlborough Black Sea Fleet" also with some slightly later entries and a number of pencil drawings of boats. Marbled covers detached. In various places there is also some Ottoman Turkish script or annotations, and some round customs or administrative stamps. – A 1916 Canadian diary dated 1916, approx. 20 leaves. – Bifolium with pencil notes related to Sierra Leone, a typed 1918 press message, and a few other ephemeral items.
