Lecomte, Ferdinand. THE WAR IN THE UNITED STATES… TRANSLATED FROM THE FRENCH. New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1863. 12mo. 148, [12], ads] pp. Original cloth. First American edition. The present is Franklin K. Young's copy, with his annotations, underlining and markings throughout (signed and initialed in various places.) Franklin Knowles Young (1857-1931) was born in Boston and authored many books about chess in the late 1800s. Young was unique among American chess authors in how he systematically treated chess as if it were warfare. His works on chess were built around military science, and his chess terminology often borrowed from Jomini, Clausewitz, and European military theorists. The present book certainly tracks with this vein of thought. This work, written by a Swiss officer, was intended to explain the American conflict in military terms to a European audience, with reference to tactical evolutions, troop movements, and strategic lessons. This is exactly the sort of analysis that Young would later transpose onto the chessboard.
