ARTIST: MARTHA SAWYERS (1902-1988) SIZE: 26 7/8 x 41 in./68.2 x 104 cm PRINTER: DESCRIPTION: The involvement of China in World War II is often overlooked today. The Japanese invasion of Eastern China in 1937 spurred the United States’ involvement in Asia and eventually led to Pearl Harbor. In 1941, the United China Relief organization was founded in New York City to provide aid. Sawyers, who studied at the Art Students League of New York, created this powerful image that simultaneously displays the horrors of war and the perseverance of the Chinese people. Sawyer went on to work as a war correspondent in Asia for Life Magazine. (War & Propaganda; American)
