(ENTERTAINMENT--THEATER.) Broadside for a six-night engagement for "the celebrated African tragedian Mr. Ira Aldridge." Huddersfield, Yorkshire, England: J. Mosley for the Theatre Royal Press, 14 May 1856 Letterpress broadside, 19½ x 9¾ inches; folds, minimal wear. Ira Frederick Aldridge (1807-1867) was an African-American actor who was born in New York but emigrated in 1824 in search of greater opportunities. He slowly worked his way up through the regional theaters of Great Britain and Ireland, often billing himself as a native of Africa. He was brought in to play Othello at Covent Garden's Theatre Royal, and went on to a long career as one of England's leading actors. He is the only actor of African descent to be honored with a plaque at the Shakespeare Memorial Theater. Aldridge remained popular through the 1850s, with several tours of continental Europe. Huddersfield's Theatre Royal was in operation from the 1830s through early 1960s. The London Era of 25 May 1856 reported that Aldridge closed out the theater's season the night before, after playing "a round of popular characters this week."
