170. [Sherlock Holmes]. William Gillette. Original playbill poster for a play adapted from a story by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle by William Gillette (1853-1937) who also played the title role, from Ford’s Grand Opera House, Baltimore, Maryland, during the Gillette’s Farewell Tour, January 1930, (20.25 x 13.5 in.; 515 x 342mm), double matted and framed. Illustration by the great Sherlockian, Frederic Dorr Steele. William Gillette (1853-1937) played Sherlock Holmes in a highly successful and popular stage production–1300 performances between 1899-1932–that he himself adapted. He went on to play the role in a 1916 silent film based on the play. Gillette introduced the curved or bent briar pipe and used a magnifying glass, a violin, and a syringe and formulated the complete phrase: “Oh, this is elementary, my dear fellow.” Gillette and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle became lifelong friends.
