172. Gillette, William. Collection of (100+) vintage photographs, signed correspondence and ephemera. (ca. 1800s-1900s) Collection of (3) binders (vols. 1, 2, 3) containing (100+) Gillette materials including photographs, cigarette cards and cabinet cards of Gillette in and out of character as “Sherlock Holmes,” programs, clippings, invoices, theatrical memorabilia and ephemera, personal and business-related correspondence, handwritten, typed or copied to a variety of stationery from businesses and hotels and all signed “William Gillette” or “W.G.”. Including a letter to Mr. Seymour dated 16 Sept. 1886, which reads in part: “That 3rd Act needed strengthening – and I have re-arranged it. It gives the Northern man a chance – and will improve the piece for Boston greatly.” Volume 2 is composed entirely of sleeved cabinet card photographs and postcards of Sherlock Holmes-related subjects including novelties and cartoons, images of Mr. Gillette along with castmates and others. All items exhibit age and some handling. In vintage very good condition. Estimated value: $3,000 - $5,000
