The present later print depicts one of the most famous photographs by Robert Lebeck. It presents the famous artist Joseph Beuys sitting with an axe on a sofa. Lebeck was one of the major photojournalists in Germany and worked with numerous popular personalities such as Konrad Adenauer, Alfred Hitchcock, Elvis Presley and Romy Schneider. Lebeck’s works are characterized by a very intimate atmosphere that was not driven by sensationalism. The size of the image is 25.2 x 37 cm and the overall dimensions of the sheet are 30.6 x 40.5 cm. Robert Lebeck (1929-2014) Robert Lebeck was born in Berlin in 1929. He studied in Zurich and New York. He learned the art of photography as an autodidact. From 1952 onwards he worked as a photojournalist for various newspapers and magazines. For a year he was chief editor at GEO magazine. Later he worked again for the German weekly news magazine Stern. He gained international fame in 1960 with the photo series ‘Africa in the Year Zero’, which documented the independence of the Congo. Lebeck is also a major collector of 19th Century photographs, parts of his collection is held in the Museum Ludwig in Cologne. Since 2001 Robert Lebeck continued to live in Berlin.
