This photograph melds the portraits of Mao Zedong and Marilyn Monroe. Philippe Halsman created it in 1959 after an idea of his close friend Salvador Dalí, who made it print later as the cover of a US Vogue edition in 1971. The fusion of the symbol of Eastern communism and the American movie star and sex symbol of the West is both humoristic and unsettling. Verso of the photograph is the copyright stamp and the numbering 16/250. There are various labels on the back of the frame. The photograph is mounted on cardboard. The photograph is in very good condition. The frame shows slight traces of wear. The depiction measures 32.5 x 25 cm, the sheet 35.2 x 27.8 cm and the total dimensions, including the frame, are 44.5 x 37.2 cm. Philippe Halsman (1906-1979) Philippe Halsman first studied electrical engineering in Dresden. He moved to Paris at the age of 25, where he devoted his work to photography and studied at the Sorbonne in addition. He became known as a portrait and fashion photographer and worked for several decades for the magazine Life. In 1945, he was named the president of the American Society of Magazine Photographers. His series of 'Jump' portraits of important personalities, like Nixon and Dalí, received international recognition. In 1960, he spent some time in Russia, where he portrayed the political elite for Life. In 1963, he became a member of the Famous Photographers School. In 1977, works of his were represented at the documenta 6 in Kassel. The National Portrait Gallery in Washington devoted a retrospective to his work in 1998.
