Artist: JULES CHÉRET (1836-1932) Size: 21 x 28 1/8 in./53.2 x 71.5 cm Imp. Chaix, Paris "La Farandole, which takes place in Arles, is full of Provençal local color. Young Olivier is far too poor and shy to ask the hand of his beloved Vivette in marriage. When he and Vivette save the mysterious beggar Maurias from a beating, Maurias in gratitude tells Olivier how to win a rich reward: by visiting the ruins of the Roman amphitheater at midnight and resisting the temptations of the ghosts of the beautiful girls who died for love of dancing. . . In the poster, the wicked sirens in the amphitheater . . . look as delightfully pert as all of Chéret's girls. The small scene at lower right depicts an episode in Act I, when Vivette's girl friends give Olivier a lesson on how to approach Vivette's father and ask for her hand. At the bottom is the Provençal drum (tambourin)" (French Opera, p. xvi).
