L. Strauss & Company Trophy awarded to Wilbur Shaw, 1937 Indy 500 Winner; French sculpture group mantle clock. IRENEE ROCHARD (French, 1906-1984) patinated white metal geese sculpture group impressed: "Rochard, Made in France", and incised on marble base atop Chelsea clock base. The L. Strauss & Company trophy was one of four trophies first introduced in 1913. The Remy was awarded to the driver leading the race at 200 miles, the Prest-O-Lite for the driver leading at 300 miles, the Wheeler Schebler for 400 miles, and the Strauss was awarded to the winner of the 500 mile race. L. Strauss was an Indianapolis clothier of fine menswear. Prior to WWII, this trophy was a work of art imported from Europe. Overall; 27 1/2"H. Damage to one beak.
