Captain Emilio Carranza Rodríguez (1905-1928), was a Mexican aviator and national hero, nicknamed the "Lindbergh of Mexico". He died on the return part of a historic goodwill flight from Mexico City to the United States. He crashed in New Jersey shortly after takeoff from New York. A boldly signed menu, "E Carranza", for a luncheon held at The Bankers Club of America, New York June 22, 1928 by the Mexican Chamber of Commerce of the United States. Also signed by noted aviator Clarence Chamberlain. Carranza was chosen by his government to fly nonstop from Mexico City to Washington after the U.S. had sent Charles Lindbergh on the reverse tour (December, 1927). Carranz on June 11, 1928 in a Ryan monoplane, like Lindbergh, who had named him the "Mexi Eagle." Fog overcame Carranza at Mooresville, NC, and he was forced to stop there. This detail was politely de-emphasized in the inter-presidential telegrams that celebrate and in the speeches and parades that welcomed him to Washington, and later in New York. Determined to fly home nonstop, Carranza left Roosevelt Field, Long Island, early on but crashed and died in a thunderstorm over Pine Barrens, New Jersey. The lunch offered here is part of the celebratory festivities of Carranza's flight, and was signed June 22, 1928 before his untimely death at age 23. VG. Rare in any form.
