Moshe Sharett (1894-1965) was an Israeli politician who was Prime Minister of Israel from 1954 to 1955 and Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1948 to 1956. He signed the Israeli Declaration of Independence and was a principal negotiator in the cease-fire agreements that concluded the Israeli War of Independence. In large part, “I recently listened to the crowning speech of King Husain at the opening of the parliament in Aman, as is was broadcasted on the Jordanian radio. ... at the end of it there was a survey of economical and cultural achievements. Facts and numbers were given on the allocation of royal lands to farmers, the progress in arrogation, the industrial development, plans to look for oil and phosphates, building a Hospital, adding roads, promoting professional education and the progress of the education system. I did not write it all down and some details may have slipped my mind. ... That same evening I heard the summary of the speech on the Voice of Israel (Kol Israel) and after wards interesting interpretations. In this broadcast there was no hint to the last part of the speech. It was also not mentioned in the morning papers of the following day. ... This is in my eyes a disadvantage that should be looked at. Our general public does not read Arabic press and does not listen to the broadcasts of the Arab capitals. The image that the Israeli listener and reader gets is that all that takes place in our neighboring countries is nothing but evil plots, inner quarrels and subversion. ... The assumption that the Israeli reader is not interested in any positive progress and actions of the Arabs is a mistake that has, in my opinion, no justification. Indeed, one cannot compare the Israeli development enterprise to those of Arab states ....
