Military Commission, 15-1/2” x 18”, issued for James H. Bailey of U.S. Volunteers to rank of Captain March 13, 1866 “For gallantry and meritorious service during the war”. It has authenticate signature of E.D. Townsend and stamped signatures of President Andrew Johnson and Secretary of War Edwin Stanton. John Bailey enlisted as a private soldier, but for meritorious conduct was promoted from time to time, and when discharged he was First Lieutenant in command of his company. He was wounded three times, once by a cannon ball. During the battle of Honeyhill, while helping a crippled officer to a place of safety, a cannon ball passed through the body of the officer and burned the cheek of Lieutenant Bailey, doing him no serious injury, while the comrade was, of course, instantly killed. Lieutenant Bailey remained in the hospital but two days, when he rejoined his regiment, and was with it in all of its battles and skirmishes until it was discharged. He is listed as POW 6/29/1864 Reams' Station, VA.; Paroled 1/15/1865
