John Milton Brannan (July 1, 1819 – December 16, 1892) was an American military officer who served with distinction in the Mexican–American War as a United States Army artillery officer and as a Union Army brigadier general of United States . Clipped signature, 4" x 2 ½", “Jn. Brannan, Brig. General, USA”. Gen. Brannan commanded a division at the battle of Chickamauga. At the time of the Civil War, he was more well known as the victim of "The Staten Island Mystery." On the evening of 7/20/1858 Brannan's wife disappeared from Staten Island. It was suspected she'd been murdered or had committed suicide. Two years later, she was found living in Italy with one of her husband's former subordinate officers.
