A rare Billie Holiday handwritten letter to her last husband, Louie Mackay. Signed Lady on Hotel Wilson letterhead. Louis Mackay and Billie Holiday were separated, though still legally married by 1957. She resided in the Hotel Wilson in NYC until her death in 1959. Upon her death, he inherited her music royalties and estate. Written in pencil on two sheets. "Let's face it, you're not my husband, not even my boyfriend. You have no time for me, everything is your kids, Mildred or just everything comes before me. I am not important to you in any way. You have even made cracks about dirty bitches that meant more to you than me, so why don't we come to some kind of understanding. Well you know, just be my manager until after the Philadelphia story. I have no one else and don't want anyone but Louie. How much can I take. You're in New York two days and I, your wife, see you five minutes, so just lets be friends and forget it. Lady". Provenance: Property from an important Bay Area jazz collection.
